Kids Helping Kids
Kids Helping Kids
At Kids’ Food Basket, we believe kids have the power to help each other escape hunger. Kids Helping Kids is our volunteer program led by young people who want to learn more about hunger and help end it in our community. Through this program, over 25% of the hours volunteered at Kids’ Food Basket are from kids under age 18.
Being involved with Kids Helping Kids is an open and creative experience. Every project is created and led by students. Projects you might lead include:
- Volunteering at Kids’ Food Basket
- Creating tools to teach others about hunger and ways to end it
- Leading fundraising and food drives
Lead the charge!
Do you love to talk with your friends about the issues you’re passionate about? Are you ready to create your own projects to help end hunger? Our Kids Helping Kids program has three opportunities for students who want to help lead the attack on childhood hunger. These come with training to help you learn more and get started:
Youth Action Board
The Youth Action Board (YAB) is made up of area high school students. As a member you will plan and implement projects in schools and communities, and work as a whole group to plan the Kids Helping Kids Celebration. Meetings include a variety of activities that will build leadership, creative problem solving, public speaking, communication and critical thinking skills. We will also hear from guest speakers who will talk about event planning, the role of social media and other topics. Each meeting will work towards preparing students to lead projects and events, and give them a real world outlet to do so.
Youth Action Board members receive volunteer service hours for their time and have had the opportunity to apply for scholarships because of their service. To learn more and get involved, contact Kyle (kyle@kidsfoodbasket.org) or (616) 235-4532. To apply for YAB follow this link to download the application.
Junior Ambassadors
As a Junior Ambassador, you are the link between Kids’ Food Basket and your community. Junior Ambassadors help share the Kids’ Food Basket story with others and encourage other kids to help them get involved. Junior Ambassadors are usually in middle or high school, although younger students have also participated. This is a great way to begin leading in your school before joining the Youth Action Board! To learn more and get involved, contact Catrina (catrina@kidsfoodbasket.org) or (616) 235-4532.
Group volunteering
Kids Helping Kids is a great way for youth groups to lead projects at their school, facility or home. Student councils, church groups, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, clubs and others can get their community involved through:
Volunteering at KFB headquarters
Every day over 150 volunteers are needed at Kids’ Food Basket headquarters to pack and deliver Sack Suppers. Individuals, families and groups of all ages are invited to join us. All on-site volunteer times are scheduled in advance, so please contact Adrienne (adrienne@kidsfoodbasket.org) if you’re interested in this opportunity.
Celebrate being full
The Kids Helping Kids Celebration takes place in late spring. The event recognizes the work of kids who help improve the lives of other kids by ending hunger. This event includes an ice cream social, lawn games, bag decorating and musical entertainment. Students and their families are invited to attend.
