Kids Helping Kids

Kids Food Basket has a strong commitment to our Kids Helping Kids program. We believe that youth volunteerism promotes children to be civic-minded, community-oriented, and allows them to participate in their own personal development. Kids Helping Kids Gives the opportunity to children to learn about community needs such as childhood hunger, and gives them the tools to share and act upon this information with their community, peers, and family. Such tools include attending community meetings, learning how to organize food drives, and how to be effective leaders at school. These tools allow children to build strong leadership skills while learning how to impact their community.

Here are some of the ways that you can help to attack childhood hunger…

Kids Food Basket Wish List Drive
Collect items for Kids Food Basket's (KFB's) sack suppers! You can pass out flyers and set up collection boxes at your community organization, church, at a local grocery store, your work place, in your neighborhood, etc. By facilitating a Wish List Drive you are creating awareness as well as collecting food for hungry kids in Grand Rapids.

Cents for Suppers
Decorate a can and ask your family to put all of their change in it for a month. You can also give them to your relatives and friends to make it a friendly competition. For the winner, make a batch of your favorite cookies. You can also make this a competition between departments at your workplace or challenge the small groups at you church or any other groups you are involved with to compete or make a weekly collection for change. You can also contact your community organization or church and ask if they could have a special "Cents for Suppers" offering at one of their services. For approximately $100 you can feed a child a sack supper every school day for a whole school year!

Trail Mix Project
Have your group collect the ingredients for the KFB trail mix recipe. This makes enough trail mix for a full days supply. Once you have collected the ingredients your group will assemble the trail mix so it can be put into the sack suppers and go directly to the children we feed.

Pop Can Drive
Go around on a Saturday in neighborhoods where you live, and ask people if you can have their empty pop cans and bottles.

Hat Day
Organize a hat day at your school. Anyone who pays $1 in their 1st hour gets to wear a hat for the day!

Fast For The Kids
This would work best on a Saturday. Chose the amount of time you want to fast. While fasting, go around and collect donations, food items, or supplies for KFB. Be sure to explain the purpose of KFB (we have a flyer/brochure you can use) and why you are fasting. You may also collect donations before hand (as pledges) if so desired.

Decorate Sacks
Decorate a bag and brighten a day! This is great for anyone who wants to make a child's dinner ever-so-special and brighten their day with more than just a brown sack. Purchase 8lb paper sacks (or "extra-large") and decorate them with cheerful decorations. We ask that because the sacks are going to public schools that there be no religious messages on the sacks. This could be a great activity for an evening church group, groups of young children, groups of seniors, or as a service project.

That Favorite "Something"
Give up any one of your favorites for one month. This can include your favorite coffee drink, fast food, one night out, those random shopping sprees, etc. Then take the money you would have spent on this favorite something and donate it to KFB. To make this even bigger, challenge your coworkers or family and friends to do the same. The cost of each sack supper is $0.62! Just think, for the cost of a fast food pop you could feed 2-3 children a sack supper!
