Each winter on the first snow day of the year I revisit my thoughts on snow days as a child verse today.  As a child it was an exciting adventure having a lazy morning watching cartoons with a delicious lunch.  Then the fun really began when we went outside to build forts and make our own winter wonderland!  As our drenched socks, mittens and hat lay in a pile by the side door, we'd then sit at the table for some yummy hot chocolate to finish off the day.  Snow days ROCKED!

Today, my thoughts on snow days are the stark opposite.  In Grand Rapids Public Schools there are more than15,000 students that  receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch each day; 86% of the school district receives these meals and when closed 0% receive them.  So instead of groaning and moaning that school is on today, I'd like to say THANK YOU to the GRPS administration for feeding these 15,000 children today.  Kids' Food Basket utilizes the schools for distribution of meals so when they close, we close.  Today the six school districts we serve (Godfrey Lee, Godwin Heights, Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Kelloggsville and Wyoming) are all open.  THANK YOU!!!  This means that for the 4,599 children we are currently serving they'll have breakfast and lunch at school, AND be sent home with a Sack Supper.  Right before a long weekend, this is especially important.

Kudos to the administration and teachers who braved the snow today to make this possible.  Many thanks to the KFB volunteers who will pack and deliver meals to these sites this afternoon.  I no longer think snow days rock. YOU are the ones that ROCK!
